Nathan Earle (SVC 2003-04)

2017 has started well for 28 year old cyclist Nathan Earle despite being left without a ride for this season following the merger of his Drapac team with Cannondale to form the CannondaleDrapac
team. Fortunately he was able to secure a late contract with the Team Ukyo from Japan.

Martin Healy 20.7.1938 – 17.5.2017 (SVC 1951-56)

 

Martin John Healy was the son of Martin and Nell Healy. He along with his sisters, Marie and Lillian grew up in Rosebery on Tasmania’s west coast. (Marie married prominent Old Virgilian – Roger Smart).

As the Rosebery Convent School was not opened until 1958, he was initially educated at the local State School (supplemented by correspondence lessons from the Home Missionary Sisters.) In his final year of primary school he won the Electrolytic Zinc Company Scholarship – open to the children of that company’s employees and the most valuable secondary schools’ scholarship in Tasmania at the time.

Sir John Galvin MBE 1908-1994 (SVC 1921-26)

John Galvin was born in 1908 and was one of seven children whose father was an odd-jobs man at His Majesty’s Theatre which was located in the upper end of Liverpool St between Murray and Harrington Streets.

What follows has been gleaned from various newspaper clippings contained in the College’s archives and from Tim Jetson’s ‘St Virgil’s College (1911-94).’ It is extraordinary that no biography appears to have been written on this ‘larger than life’ character.
