The following tribute of Alf appeared in the Hobart Mercury on January 3 2021.
A highly regarded drummer who had worked with many Australian and International musicians. The Tasmanian jazz community will remember his many performances. A great jazz man, mentor and gentleman. RIP Alf. Hobart Jazz Club Inc.
A wake was held at Hobart’s Duke of Wellington hotel recently to remember the man who had played with legends such as Don Burrows and Herb Ellis and was one of Australia’s best jazz drummers. The occasion was reported in the Hobart Mercury
Among those in attendance was school friend Val Noga (SVC 1960-65) who owed his love of blues and jazz to the drummer.
“World class overseas jazz musicians would compliment him because he was so sophisticated.
“He was largely self-taught and just had a feel for it.”
Val said Alf’s legacy was mentoring young musicians, including his son Mike, the legendary Drones drummer and celebrated solo artist who died in August 2020.
