In a nailbiting finish at the South Australian State Championships, 19-year-old Tassie young gun Max Giuliani managed to beat out multi-Olympic medallist Kyle Chalmers in the 100m freestyle.
“It’s early days yet and good to be around PB considering I’ve had time off over Christmas and been sick last week,” Giuliani said.
“I thought this meet was going to be a write-off,” he said, “between no training and being crook.”
Max was clocked at 49.77 seconds, with Chalmers at 49.78. It was Giuliani’s 2nd fastest time ever. Max holds the Tasmanian men’s residential records for the 100m freestyle at 49.66 sec and the 200m freestlye at 1:50.43
Max left Tassie in November 2022 to move to the Miami Swimming Club on the Gold Coast “Just to give it a crack, so there are no what-ifs,” he said. In 2015 a young Tassie lass – Ariarne Titmus – made a similar move achieved great things. We wish Max every success.
